Success can be different things to different people. For someone, success can be getting the job they have been dreaming of since they were a child. For someone else success could be reaching a financial position where they do not have to depend on others. There can also be people who need to have their name known in the world. For them success means fame. Sometimes success can be a mixture of all these things.
Generally, a life with a good family, a home and a good job is considered to be the definition of success. Of course, that is the general societal norm about the matter. People can choose to find their own definition of success as they grow up and experience life. No matter what kind of success you decide you want, there are always going to be two paths to it. You can choose one of these paths. This decision is very important as it decides who you are as a human being.
Path One: Focusing on Others
You might wonder how someone can be successful by focusing on others. Well, though it might puzzle some of you, this is the path a lot of people choose due to various reasons. No matter what profession or calling we choose in life, there are always going to be others who are in that same profession as us. They are going to be our peers. From a young age most of us are encouraged to be always better than others. If we are taking part in a test we are admired if we gain more marks than others. You can see how there are parents who get angry with their children if their children do not score more marks than the neighbour’s kid. At that point scoring good marks is not enough but being ahead of others is also important. This same line of thinking seems to follow a lot of people as they grow up and become adults.
For such people, success is always staying ahead of their peers. It is being the one everyone says is the best. Just being successful in general is not enough. A person who thinks like this always suffers from the fear of becoming less known and his or her peers surpassing them. That is not a good way to live. They become more harmful when they start to use all the short-cuts and all the negative methods to reach the success they need. For example, there are companies who pay people to say nice things about their products and say bad things about their competitors. That is to make the general consumer choose their product over some other product by believing the false narrative they create. You can see this with all types of products from smart phones to book reviews. Social media has become a great tool for this as people can use the advantage of anonymity to say whatever they want about a peer’s product and promote their own product in the process.
People who choose the path of focusing on others are the ones who believe using whatever method to put their peers down and step on them to reach their success is fine.
Path Two: Focusing on Yourself
Focusing on yourself means reaching for success by constantly improving yourself. The people who choose this path to success evaluate themselves constantly by who they were before and who they are now. They are always trying to grow as professionals and individuals. They do not expect to reach success in a short term by using the connections they have in an industry. Sure, they can use help of those they know but they believe in working hard to get to where they want to be. They plan and they work hard. They also believe in getting advice about their journey from people they trust. You can see them having mentors who are ready to help them by giving them the right advice and helping them make good decisions.
However, this path is not an easy one. It is also not a path that is going to get you the success you need overnight. You will have to put in the time and work hard. You will also have to improve yourself if you want to move forward.
What is interesting about these two paths is that people who generally choose the second path gain the success they want gradually. Since they work hard for it sincerely without causing trouble for others, their success is more genuine and it lasts longer. As for those who choose the first path, they generally can reach the success they want faster because they are ready to do whatever negative thing is necessary to reach that goal. However, their success is not genuine. Since they are more interested in bashing their competitors and using them for their own advantage than actually improving themselves, they can very easily lose all they have gained within a short time too.
This is why it is important to decide which path you want to take to reach your success. The path you choose is going to define you as a professional as well as a human being. Therefore, make your choice wisely.
